Page of Cups Tarot Card Description

The Page of Cups is a court card within the minor arcana suit of Cups. The traditional artwork features a young person in free flowing clothing standing by a shore. They hold a golden cup and gaze at it in surprise because within the cup is a fish.

We don’t know how the fish got there but it prevents the Page from drinking or tossing the water as the fish looks at them as if trying to communicate with the Page. This pause or hesitation of the Page is important in this card’s meaning because it is often when we pause that we will have a new idea or find a creative solution.

Page of Cups Upright Meaning

Court cards often represent real people that we know in our lives. Pages are young people of pre-teen age. Court cards represent the element of their suit and in this case Cups represent water (emotions, relationships and love.) So this card represents a young person that we know who is emotionally sensitive, creative or a dreamer.

Pages deliver messages and this one is a positive message relating to love. The fish in the original art work is important: it shows that we shouldn’t look a gift horse in the mouth and instead embrace the situation we find ourselves in with child-like joy and wonder.

“Without leaps of imagination, or dreaming, we lose the excitement of possibilities. Dreaming, after all, is a form of planning.” - Gloria Steinem

Page of Cups reversed

When The Page of Cups comes to us reversed it is warning us that burnout or a creative block is on its way. If we continue to live as we have been doing it will seriously affect us in the long term. This card urges us to take time off and do activities that we enjoy. The Page of Cups wants us to approach life with the same curiosity and joy that we had as a child and find time in our day to day lives to play.

This card discusses themes of imagination and dreams but when reversed it refers to their downside which is: being very imaginative with our fears and nightmares. To remedy this we must fill our lives with content that is positive. Movies, books, online videos and social media can all be used to make our imagination more positive.

“You need imagination in order to imagine a future that doesn’t exist.” - Azar Nafisi
